AIP WA Branch De Laeter Medal

Medal

The De Laeter Medal of the Australian Institute of Physics Western Australian Branch honours the legacy of Professor John de Laeter, a distinguished physicist whose contributions shaped science and education in Western Australia.

Professor John de Laeter
Emeritus Professor John de Laeter - 2008

Professor John de Laeter was a pioneering physicist who played a key role in establishing Western Australian institutions like Technology Park, the Curtin Science and Mathematics Education Centre, Scitech, and the Gravity Discovery Centre—advancing research and innovation in WA.

At Curtin University, he held senior academic positions, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Development, with his legacy recognized through the John de Laeter Centre for Mass Spectrometry. Honoured as an Officer of the Order of Australia, his work continues to inspire scientific progress in Western Australia.

John de Laeter was a long-time member and former chair of the WA AIP.

In recognition of John de Laeter's dedication to fostering academic excellence and innovation, the medal is awarded annually at three leading Western Australian universities: The University of Western Australia (UWA), Curtin University, and Murdoch University.

The institutions present the awards to students who have demonstrated excellence in scientific research, academic achievement, and a commitment to advancing knowledge in their field. The medal serves as a symbol of Professor de Laeter’s vision, inspiring the next generation of scientists and scholars in Western Australia.
