The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) is inviting teachers and careers advisers to its free Industry Day for Teachers events in Victoria this winter.

Taking place at Swinburne University of Technology and CSL (Melbourne) on Thursday, 30 July and La Trobe Albury-Wodonga on Thursday, 10 September, these free one-day professional development days will showcase the many amazing career opportunities open to maths students. The day will provide insights into the increasing demand for mathematics and statistics in the workforce, the wide range of career opportunities that rely on these skills, and education pathways that lead to these professions. This program is made possible thanks to support from The Invergowrie Foundation as well as contributions from various industry partners, universities and associations.

Who can attend?

High school maths teachers, STEM teachers (physics, biology, chemistry), and careers advisers.

What to expect:

• Engage with industry professionals to explore how mathematics is applied in real-world settings through guest speaker sessions and industry site visits.
• Explore strategies to build student engagement in mathematics.
• Gain practical insights and resources to support student pathways into mathematical sciences and STEM careers.
• Connect with fellow teachers and careers advisers.
• Enjoy catering throughout the day. Includes morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
• Receive a complimentary AMSI showbag filled with useful resources and materials.

Themes:

Hear from speakers from industry and academia as they cover the importance of a maths education in the following sectors: artificial intelligence, research and development, engineering, data management, business analytics, biostatistics, sustainable tech, and more. Hear directly from CSL professionals at their state-of-the-art global headquarters in Parkville as they explain how mathematics, statistics and data science underpin their work and careers, giving teachers valuable real-world examples to share with students, followed by a laboratory tour.

Allowances:

• Eligibility for a $500 CRT/Travel Bursary. These are strictly limited and available only for Victorian high school teachers. To express your interest, email AMSI at exec@amsi.org.au
• Receive a Certificate of Attendance acknowledging participation in an AMSI professional learning activity. This can be used as evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration purposes.
